The Bank of England will initially issue 440 million of the new £5 notes — featuring wartime leader Winston Churchill and the quotation, "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat" — and the old note will cease to be legal tender in May next year. He said it is estimated to last five years.The new note also has security features intended to make it harder to counterfeit.In the words of BoE governor Mark Carney, the fiver is capable of surviving "a splash of claret, a flick of cigar ash, the nip of a bulldog and even a spin in the washing machine".  

In Europe too, Romania uses polymer banknotes..The notes are expected to last two and a half times longer than their paper counterparts and, according to Mr Carney, "can better withstand being repeatedly folded into wallets or scrunched up inside pockets".
